Thunderbolts Trailer Unveils Lewis Pullman as Sentry in Marvel’s Phase Five Finale

Marvel Studios has officially dropped the debut trailer for Thunderbolts, which will mark the final film of Phase Five in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The significance of the asterisk in the title remains a mystery, as Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige has yet to clarify its meaning.

The trailer opens with Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova visiting her father, the Red Guardian (played by David Harbour), who appears to be in a tough spot. Both characters seem dissatisfied with their current situations, hinting at a need for change and excitement.

As the trailer unfolds, we witness the formation of this anti-hero team, featuring Wyatt Russell as John Walker / U.S. Agent, Hannah John-Kamen as Ava Starr / Ghost, and Olga Kurylenko as Antonia Dreykov / Taskmaster. The dynamics within the team are tense, with characters grappling with their roles and often clashing with one another. Sebastian Stan reprises his role as Bucky Barnes / Winter Soldier, and the trailer suggests that Bucky may become the de facto leader of the Thunderbolts after initially confronting them.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus makes an appearance as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, who appears to be orchestrating the Thunderbolts. However, the standout moment of the trailer is the first look at Lewis Pullman as Robert “Bob” Reynolds, also known as Sentry. His bemusement upon the unexpected arrival of the team adds a humorous touch to the trailer.

Pullman, recognized for his role as Lt. Robert “Bob” Floyd in Top Gun: Maverick, stepped into the role of Sentry after Steven Yeun exited due to scheduling conflicts. The character of Sentry, often regarded as one of the most formidable superheroes in the Marvel Universe, has had limited exposure outside of comic books, making his cinematic debut highly anticipated. His previous appearances have mainly been in mobile games like Marvel Puzzle Quest, Marvel Future Fight, and Marvel Snap.

Thunderbolts is directed by Jake Schreier from a script by Lee Sung Jin, who is adapting the story from an initial draft by Black Widow screenwriter Eric Pearson. David Harbour has previously praised Pearson’s story as having a “really cool” concept that promises to make a significant impact on the MCU.

Fans can look forward to Thunderbolts, which is set to hit theaters in May 2025.
